Almost every kid must have been to summer camp, at least camp only for three or four days. These camps each have their own purpose, for learning, improving themselves, or having fun, etc. But what if you have to choose from three great summer camps which are on of the worlds best summer camps, what would you choose? These camps all have their own style and methods of teaching, and they are all located in different places. Also they have each positive and negative aspect, which I am going to write about now.
Fist camp is Camp Big Apple. This camp is located in New York, and is a three week intensive Academic English camp. In this camp, Elementary and Middle school students build their math and vocabulary skills, and prepare for test like SAT. Korean professors who have at least Masters Degree in American university teaches ach classes. For special activities students get to do tour of the city, trips to local museums, and watching Broadway shows.
The positive aspects of Camp Big Apple are that camp focuses on building an Academic Skills. But on the other hand, because this camp’s purpose is to study, students cannot have much fun. Camp Big Apple could be recommended to students who are preparing for big tests, and ones who wanted to be more global, because students from all around the world live in same dormitory. Also one of this camp’s major negative aspects is that we cannot actually trust teachers. What if professors got Masters degree in biology and teaches Roman history? Camp Big Apple needs to specify professor’s profiles and introduce paragraph to parents to relieve after they sent their kids to Big Apple.
The second camp is Camp Ranch West. This camp placed in rural Canada, and is a four week camp. This camp believes that students will learn English best when they are doing something that interests them. Because of this philosophy, Camp Ranch West makes their students to choose subjects they want to study among: Math, Art, History, Science, Politics, World Cultures, Music, Computer Programming, and Literature. Teachers are recent graduates from the local university. During camp students home- stay. For special activities, there includes horseback riding, river rafting, hiking, canoeing, and mountain biking.
The positive aspects of Camp Ranch West are that they could choose subject by themselves, and could experience nature. Selecting their own subjects and actually learning them helps students to grow their independence and do their responsibilities. Also by doing special activities takes place in nature, such as river rafting and hiking, students could experience nature. In addition, students’ mind and body will become strong and healthy. On the other hand, if we look at the negative aspects of this camp, we could find out the major negative aspect is about where this camp placed and its teachers. It is a positive thing that students could experience nature, but is a problem that student from urban areas cannot adapt their surroundings very easily, and if anything bad happens its actually very hard to connect with urban areas. Also for teachers, they are ones who recently graduated local university. They are very young, and we do not know standards of university they have graduated. Camp Ranch West has to employ teachers who have better standards.
Third and last camp is Head Start Splash, which is five week camp located in Cebu, Philippines. Students who attend this camp study program of International School. Teachers of this camp are people who achieved Bachelor’s degrees and certificates to teach English in second language. Parents should accompany with their child, and they will be provided a small apartment. Outside activities are, snorkeling, fishing, a trip to local butterfly garden and visit to local exotic animal refuges.
Camp Head Start Splash has lots of positive aspects. But the major positive aspect is about teachers and program. As we can see in the paragraph, all teachers have achieved master degrees and certificates to teach English in a second language. This degrees and certificates prove standards of teachers, and because this camp has International School program, teacher’s major and program matches. Furthermore, students could experience nature, and don’t have to apart with their parents.
Camp Head Start Splash also has negative aspects, which is about camp term. 5 weeks of camp term is very long, and for Korean students they have to miss their schools to finish this camp.
In conclusion, in result of comparing and contrasting three camps, I think that Camp Head Start Splash is the best summer camp; I liked it because Camp Head Start Splash had the best teachers and program, and had least negative aspects.
